There is something wonderfully simple about dress-up.

Give a child a pair of wings and suddenly they can fly. Give them a crown and they have a kingdom to rule. Add a blanket, a few cushions and an open mind, and the living room can become almost anywhere.

For children, dressing up isn't simply about putting on a costume. It is an invitation to imagine themselves somewhere else, someone else, or perhaps even a version of themselves they haven't discovered yet.

More Than Just Playing Pretend

When children dress up, they are given the freedom to explore different characters, stories and possibilities. They might become a brave knight, a mischievous fairy, a dragon soaring through the sky or a queen preparing for an important royal meeting.

As adults, we sometimes want to help children play. We explain what something is, how it works and what it was intended for.

But imagination doesn't always need instructions.

A child might look at a pair of butterfly wings and decide they belong to a magical creature living in an enchanted forest. Another might decide they're actually dragon wings. Neither is wrong.

That freedom is part of the magic.
